Tragedy struck on Sunday morning as a truck crushed a pastor, Ojo Mattew, and a commercial okada rider to death on Oyero Road, Ijoko, in the Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State.
It was learnt that the motorcyclist, Ayo Nugbohoyon, was taking the pastor to a church when the both of them were crushed by a truck conveying cement and asbestos.
The truck pushed them into the path of an oncoming Toyota Camry car with a Lagos number carrying five members of a family, who were also going to church.
The driver of the car, identified as Samuel, and his family members – wife and three children – reportedly sustained injuries and were rushed to a hospital in the area. The car fell into the drainage channel by the roadside.
According to PUNCH, the truck marked Lagos EPE712XH, was heading inward Oyero from Ogba Ayo when its tyres slipped off the steep part of the road and veered into the motorcycle, which was going towards Ogba Ayo.
The corpses of the dead Pastor and okada man were taken to Ifo General Hospital Mortuary, as policemen from the Agbado division and some residents of the community were seen making efforts to clear the road. Officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps later joined them in the operation.
An okada rider and friend of Nugbohoyon, Israel Oyewo, said he (the deceased) had wanted to travel to Benin Republic to meet his wife who gave birth on Friday.
He said, “It is very painful. His wife had a baby two days ago and he had planned to travel later today (Sunday) before the incident happened.
The passenger he carried, a pastor, also died. He was taking the pastor to a church.”

Kogi Guber: I Won The Poll, Audu’s Votes Died With Him – Wada

Idris Wada, governor of Kogi state and candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the November 21 election, says the votes of Abubakar Audu, his main rival in the poll, “died with him”.
Audu passed on shortly after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared the election inconclusive.
The electoral commission explained that a winner could not be declared because the number of cancelled votes was higher than the margin between the two leading contenders.
Audu, who was ahead, polled 240,861 votes, while Wada got 199,514 votes, leaving a margin of 41,353, which was less than the 49,953 votes that were voided.
INEC subsequently scheduled a supplementary election for December 5 and asked APC to replace its late candidate.
But in a statement on Sunday, Wada, who had earlier expressed reservation over INEC’s directive, accused the commission of doing “a hatchet job”.
He said being the only surviving candidate with the “majority of lawful votes cast”, INEC ought to issue him a certificate of return.
“Whatever votes Audu scored in the election died with him,” read the statement signed on his behalf by Phrank Shaibu, his chief communications manager.
Wada described as “specious” INEC’s argument that APC’s right to substitution was sustained by the electoral act, saying the electoral body should know that it is for the court, not the commission, to determine which course of action is effective or not.
“In arriving at a decision, INEC merely carried out the directives of the attorney-general of the federation… the AGF is not competent to issue directives to INEC to allow APC to substitute its candidate for the Kogi guber poll and that such directives are null and void for its inconsistency with the provisions of the constitution,” the statement read.
“To us as a party, the most egregious of the faux pas committed by INEC is asking the APC to lawfully nominate a candidate for the supplementary governorship election without a valid and legally cognizable primary election of the party conducted within the mandatory timeliness specified by the electoral act.
“It is our considered opinion that, INEC, more than any other body, ought to know that having regards to the provisions of section 141 of the electoral act, 2010, votes scored by a candidate who died during an election cannot be inherited by or transferred to a person who was not a candidate at the said election and who did not participate in all stages of such election, for the purpose of concluding such election.”
He said it was on the strength of the position of the electoral act on the developments in the state that he has asked the court to compel INEC to issue him with a certificate of return.
The statement added that the party was hopeful that the court will issue an order of injunction restraining APC from organising or holding a fresh primary election for the purpose of “any supplementary election”.

Boko Haram Kills 7 People Including A Soldier In Fresh Borno Attacks

In two separate Boko Haram attacks, seven people including a soldier, were killed in both Bam and Gajigana villages of Biu and Magumeri Local Government Areas of Borno State, while an unspecified number of teenage girls were abducted in Bam Village. Several more people were injured in Gajigana village after insurgents set ablaze shops and houses without confrontation.
A resident of the area who fled to Miringa town for safety, Mallam Ali Bam, said that the insurgents went to the village at about 3:30 am on the weekend and set the whole village ablaze.
He said:
“Boko Haram terrorists after separating a lot of teenage girls from married women in Bam, set ablaze the whole village and fled with the girls unchallenged, as the attack lasted for some hours before they fled. I called on General Buratai to do something as we have been telling the soldiers that the Boko Haram were so close to the village, but they only went to Mangari village which is few kilometers away from Buratai and shot into the air and left. The soldiers don’t want to confront the terrorists, Buratai should better do something before they start attacking and sacking villages, as they were doing before.” Then they attacked and burnt down Gajiganna village killing three persons including a soldier before stealing lots of foodstuff.
An eyewitness said that the insurgents who came at 8:30pm on Friday started shooting sporadically into the air to scare people, but they ended up killing one man, one woman and a soldier.
He said:
“I believe it was a revenge mission, because recently, we arrested over 17 Boko Haram insurgents in the community and handed them over to the military. I am calling on the Federal government and the military authorities to do something about the pockets of insurgents in the bushes and villagers before they regroup and start attacking big towns and villages,”.He said that the attack on Gajigana could have been avoided if soldiers acted on the information that they were given rather when the insurgents came the soldiers took to their heels without fighting them.

Mum Gives Birth After Doctors Confirmed She Can’t Have Kids Anymore

A mum, 36 year old Emma Bromfield, who was told she could never have any more children was shocked after she gave birth to a baby boy – just two days after she found out she was pregnant.
Emma and her husband Jason, 38, had not planned on adding to their family after already defying the odds to have Millie, seven, Molly, six, and 15-month-old George.
But after missing her period last month, Emma did a pregnancy test on Tuesday and was stunned when she realised she was expecting.
She went to her GP on Thursday morning after passing blood and was sent for an early pregnancy scan at the Queen’s Hospital in Burton-upon-Trent, Staffs.
Her doctor told her there was a heartbeat and that she was around nine weeks pregnant but could be having a miscarriage.
But Emma had the shock of her life when a midwife at the hospital told her she was actually 35 weeks pregnant.
Incredibly, the mum-of-four was taken to the maternity ward to be examined at 3.30pm where they realised she had dilated 5cm and was already in labour.
Emma then delivered a healthy baby boy Frankie, who weighed 6lb 1oz, just 40 minutes later at 4.10pm.
Sunday, Emma, who lives with her husband-of-nine years Jason in Newhall, Derbyshire, said she didn’t gain any weight or have any pregnancy symptoms.
She added:
“The nurse who was doing the scan said: ‘I don’t know what to say, this scan shows you are 35 weeks gone’. “I was in total shock. “I am not new to the signs of pregnancy and I had not had any of the morning sickness I had had with the other three.
“With George I was waddling around and couldn’t even do up my coat. “With this one I hadn’t put on any weight and I was still in my everyday jeans. “Amazingly, I’ve actually lost weight now and I’ve had to buy loads of new clothes.
“It was the best pregnancy ever. “I had read about this in magazines and always thought: ‘how could you go that long without knowing?’ And then it happened to me.”Emma, who works as a lunchtime supervisor at a school, said everything happened so quickly that the sex of their new baby was a complete surprise.
Emma’s Husband who is a security officer said:
“I was only 15 minutes away from the hospital and probably drove through three or four red lights. “I called work to tell them I wasn’t coming in because my wife was in labour. “They said: ‘we didn’t even know your wife was pregnant ‘ and I said: ‘neither did I’.
“I got to the hospital ten minutes after Emma gave birth. “She did everything in a day instead of nine months. “We really have defied the odds. “It’s unbelievable.
“We are still in shock, but it was a nice early Christmas present for us.”The surprise birth was made all the sweeter because when she was younger Emma had problems with her ovaries and was told she couldn’t have children.
Dad Jason added: “When I met her, we had two girls and then Emma suffered two miscarriages both at five weeks.
“She was then told she probably couldn’t have a baby boy and amazingly we’ve now had two.”Emma added: “Our other children have taken to him really well, although Molly thought we had bought Frankie from the hospital shop and asked if it had run out of girls.

The Amazing Story Of A Nigerian I Found On Facebook | Read

Truly amazing story as shared by a Nigerian man, Ken Davidson pictured with the elderly Nigerian woman above. Read below:
On a sub zero freezing but bright and sunny late morning in Toronto, I gained an Adopted Mum. So there I was patiently awaiting my turn to go through immigration with the Toronto Border force, and within earshot, I heard a rather fraught and somewhat distressing conversation between a stern border force immigration official…and a wheel chair bound grandma…near enough same age as my mum.
She obviously didn’t speak much in terms of English, but I could tell from her pidgin English that she is Delta State, possibly Urhobo.
The immigration officer was asking her who she came to see and how long for…she couldn’t understand a word. The immigration officer was at this stage getting rather impatient and started raising her voice at which point the poor lady started crying. So being the only Nigerian around, I stepped up and politely told the officials that I speak the same language as the lady. Quite quickly, the lady looked at me and said my son, and started rapping Urhobo splattered with pidgin English. Although I told her I wasn’t Urhobo but I can converse in pidgin quite well. And that if we cannot make any headway, I’d call a few close friends that are Urhobo. To cut a long story short, the immigration officials were categorical that if they couldn’t locate the relative that invited her, they’d have to send her back.
The poor lady broke into an Asthma crisis upon hearing “deport”. Apparently her daughter who has been in Canada for a decade invited her and before Mama left Nigeria, she (daughter) gave her all her contact details. Already in a terribly distressed state, grandma had misplaced the details. Speaking pidgin to her, I asked if she has a cellphone…otherwise called “handset”, that I can look at to get her daughter’s contact details. She promptly produced her phone…And guess what? The phone turned out to be one of the very old style Nokias. As I was scrolling through the phone and trying to locate Charity, her daughter’s number…as if we didn’t have enough stuffs to deal with, the phone died on us! I opened it up so that I could swap the sim card into one of mine…only to discover it was indeed one of the old style full size SIMS which obviously couldn’t fit into mine.
By this time, I had spent an additional hour and a quarter trying to assist…One thing was paramount in my mind, to do all that was humanly possible to avoid her being sent back to the hell hole she just escaped from. Lol. Still visibly distressed, I got my phone out and called a close friend who lives in Nigeria…who is also Urhobo and speaks the dialect perfectly. Na so the woman eyes lit up when she heard a familiar dialect down the line telling her to calm down that all Is going to be well. That that man with her is going to sort it all out. Lol. Whilst all these was going on, I started going through her hand luggage meticulously and methodically…and after about 45 minutes I hit the jackpot and a presto there it was all crumpled…was Charity, her daughter’s contact details! Promptly dialled her number…and a rather apprehensive voice came through…It was Charity – mama’s daughter.
She had apparently been waiting for three solid hours in the arrival hall worried sick. Without further ado, we promptly got our passports processed and made our way out…into the waiting arms of Charity, mama’s daughter….whom she hadn’t seen in 10 very long years. Tears were flowing all around…and mama insisted that I should come for her so that she could pray for me. Right there in the arrival hall, I knelt down next to her wheelchair and she prayed and prayed….without minding the hordes of Canadians walking past wondering what the heck Is going on in the middle of the arrival hall.
To cap it all up, I gave mama a parting gift and told the daughter who was apparently gobsmacked, dumbfounded and extremely emotional…that I have a mum of a similar age, who also quite often travels wheelchair bound and in all these I would want to think that should my mum par adventure find herself in a similar situation in future, a similarly kind hearted human being would step in and intercede.
Although it took at least 2.5 hours out of what is a hectic schedule for me, I couldn’t possibly have walked away from Grandma. And of course mamas daughter insisted on taking a selfie of me with mama before I dashed off…By a stroke of coincidence, the friend who i called to calm mama….has a sister called…yup, you guessed it, Charity…What an eventful morning!

Kogi Supplementary Election : Tinubu Insists On Faleke

There were indications last night that leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) were still divided over the choice of Alhaji Yahaya Bello as the party’s candidate for next Saturday’s supplementary governorship election in Kogi State.
While the national leader of the APC, Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu and a group loyal to him in the party are insisting that Yahaya Bello’s name be withdrawn for Hon James Faleke (late Prince Abubakar Audu’s running mate) following the submission of Bello’s name by the party last Friday to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), other party chieftains have kicked against this saying Bello’s choice and subsequent nomination be maintained.
This is coming just as the INEC has given the APC until tomorrow to present a replacement for its late governorship candidate, Prince Abubakar Audu, for the Kogi supplementary election.
LEADERSHIP had on Saturday reported that Bello who came second during the party’s governorship primaries on August 29, 2015 was chosen by the party to replace the late Audu after the demise of the governorship candidate, following INEC’s declaration of the Kogi governorship poll inconclusive.
It was gathered last night that although Bello had been nominated and his name submitted to INEC late Friday evening, some powerful stakeholders in the APC want his name replaced with that of late Audu’s running mate, Hon. James Faleke.
It was learnt that the bid by the party to present Bello as its new candidate reached a stalemate yesterday when leader of the party and former Lagos State Governor, Bola Tinubu was said to have insisted that it was either Faleke or no one else stepped into the late Audu’s shoes.
A reliable source in the party told LEADERSHIP that when it became glaring that Tinubu and other stakeholders angling for Faleke would not budge an inch, the national chairman of the party, Chief John Oyegun told them that with their fixed position, the development indicates that the APC might end up not having any candidate for the Kogi supplementary governorship election slated for this Saturday.
The source, a senior party official, who sought anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the matter, told LEADERSHIP last night that if care was not taken, the party may yield to the pressure by the stakeholders who are insisting on Faleke’s candidacy because of the allegation against Bello that he is a mole in the APC working for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
He said, “The argument being canvassed now is that it should not be Bello because he allegedly worked against the late Audu’s bid to become governor. There is so much pressure on us to withdraw Bello’s candidacy in view of the crisis that the choice has generated as well as the fierce protest it is causing in Kogi State.
“Right now, we are at a crossroad because nothing has divided the party like the choice of governorship candidate for the Kogi supplementary poll. Our only saving grace is that INEC has given the party till Tuesday (tomorrow) to take a final stand on the matter.
“As we speak, national leader of the party, Asiwaju Tinubu and his group are insisting on the withdrawal of Yahaya Bello, while another group supporting Bello are also kicking that Bello’s nomination remained. The chairman is presently confused and threatening to withdraw Bello’s name and Falake’s thereby leaving the party without any candidate,” our source said.
The party stakeholders insisting on Faleke’s candidacy are contending that he deserves it because he was everywhere with the late Audu campaigning vigorously for the election, and that it would be unfair to deny him what he laboured for and favour someone who was even working against the APC candidate and the party’s interest.
INEC gives tomorrow as deadline
Meanwhile, INEC has given APC Tuesday (tomorrow) deadline to present a replacement for its late governorship candidate, Prince Abubakar Audu, for the Kogi State supplementary election on December 5.
This was disclosed by INEC’s director of voter education and publicity, Mr Oluwole Osaze-Uzzi. He also said he is unaware that a replacement has been submitted by the APC over the weekend.
INEC had last Tuesday granted the APC permission to fill the vacancy created by the death of Audu, same day it declared that the supplementary governorship election will hold on December 5.
The commission, while acknowledging that the party has officially written to it over the demise of its governorship candidate, notified the 22 political other parties that participated in the November 21 election of the date for the supplementary poll.
When asked if the APC has submitted a replacement ahead of the supplementary election, Osaze-Uzzi said, “I am not aware”. He however disclosed that Tuesday was the deadline given to the APC to submit its replacement for its late candidate

OMG!! 21-Year-Old Stabs Lagos Landlord To Death (Pictured)

Some hoodlums started a street fight on Olorogun Street, Odo Eran, in the Itire area of Lagos State on Tuesday, during which a 21-year-old stabbed a landlord, identified as Alawu Lateef, to death.
PUNCH Metro learnt that Lateef, who was a father of three, had intervened in the fight, and asked the hoodlums to leave the area, when one of them, identified as Lati Elepo , stabbed the landlord.
It was gathered that the father of three slumped, while residents arrested Elepo before he could escape with the other hoodlums. The matter was said to have been reported at the Itire Police Division.
Our correspondent learnt that the hoodlums, numbering six boys, had come from Osindero Street to meet one Balogun, who they claimed owed them about N30,000.
It was learnt that when the hoodlums did not meet Balogun at home, they started to make trouble on the street.
The landlord, Lateef, who worked as a panel beater, was said to have asked
Elepo to leave the area with his gang members. The hoodlum, however, stabbed him in the chest.
Friends and family members rushed the landlord to a private hospital in the area, from where he was referred to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi Araba, where he was confirmed dead.
His corpse was afterwards brought to the Itire division.
When PUNCH Metro visited the area, one of his neighbours, who identified himself simply as Rashidi, said Lateef did not have any business with the miscreants, but only tried to pacify them when Elepo stabbed him on the chest.
Rashidi added that Elepo and two other suspects were arrested by the police.
He said, “It was at about 11am when these boys from Osindero stormed our street. They are teenagers. They are not cultists. They said Balogun owed them N30,000 which they must collect from him.
“Lateef did not want such commotion on the street. So, he came out to caution them to take things calmly. The one who stabbed him was drunk.
“While Lateef spoke with them, the suspect went to a shop of an artisan who sharpens knives and other metals, grabbed about three knives and stabbed Lateef on the chest. Resident arrested him and dragged him to the police station while other hoodlums ran away.”
The landlord’s wife was said to be too distraught to talk with PUNCH Metro as of the time of visit.
Another neighbour, who spoke on condition of anonymity said, “Lateef was a nice man. His wife gave birth to their third child just two months ago. If Balogun was around, Lateef would not have intervened in the rampage.”
Our correspondent gathered that policemen visited the street in the evening and raided other suspected hoodlums lurking in the area.
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Joe Offor, said he would get back to our correspondent on the incident.
He, however, had yet to get back as of press time.
